Great interest in seniors’ accommodations
About a quarter of registrants with the Stockholm Municipal Housing Service over the age of 65 are interested in a seniors’ apartment. Security, fellowship and suitable accommodation are the reasons for the interest in seniors’ accommodation.
The Stockholm Office of Research and Statistics has conducted a survey on seniors’ accommodations among 1,500 people over the age of 65 on Stockholm’s housing waiting list. Of those contacted, 81 per cent responded: 61 per cent of these were women and 39 per cent were men. Half of the respondents were between 65 and 69 years of age.
One-fourth of those in the survey cite seniors’ accommodation as the reason for being on the housing waiting list. Other reasons are the possibility of getting a tenancy and to move nearer to friends and relatives. In the survey, just over a fourth of the respondents answered that they could definitely consider living in seniors’ residences, while 51 per cent indicate that they could possibly consider this option. Interest in seniors’ residences increases with age.
Security and fellowship are cited as reasons for interest in seniors’ residences. Other reasons include proximity to services and quieter accommodation suited to seniors. Those who are not interested cite as their reasons that they are healthy and do not wish to live exclusively with seniors.
